Underwater Portrait Photography in Niue: Avaiki Cave and Reef Flat Sessions

I recently spent time photographing my friend Tabby in Niue, working between Avaiki Cave and nearby reef flat pools to capture a mix of topside and underwater portraits.

Tabby is not only a strong model but also an exceptional portrait photographer, which made the session especially fluid—everything from positioning to light awareness came naturally above and below the water.

Shooting in Avaiki Cave

Avaiki Cave offers a unique environment for coastal photography. Inside, a turquoise saltwater pool contrasts sharply with the darker cave interior, creating a natural backdrop that works especially well for portraits.

Niue is known for having some of the clearest water in the world, and that clarity is evident even from the surface, where low angled light enters through the cave opening, adding soft contrast and directional highlights that can be used to shape the subject.

Reef Flat Conditions

Just outside the cave, the reef flat pools with equally clear water, provided a completely different setting. This shallow water has a different shade of blue. And when the tide started to flow, the waves breaking over our heads added another layer of movement to the images.

One of the standout moments from the session was a Snell’s window composition, with me underwater while Tabby was positioned standing at the edge of the reef pool above the surface. The refracted light created a natural split in perspective (almost like a split-shot), allowing both above- and below-water worlds to be seen in a single frame. Underwater coral detail (and Tabby’s toes) were visible outside the window, with their reflections adding another layer to the composition.

Final Thoughts

Locations like Avaiki Cave highlight how much variety exists in coastal photography. The contrast between dark cave interiors and vibrant water, combined with exceptional clarity, makes it possible to create images that feel both natural and highly composed.
