Underwater Portraits in La Jolla: Free Diving in The Cove
I spent a beautiful evening in La Jolla capturing aerial, topside, and underwater portraits of my friend while free diving in the cove and on neighboring beaches. It was one of her first times modeling, but her free dive skills allowed her to move effortlessly through the water, making the session smooth and full of natural, expressive moments. Underwater conditions were tough, with average visibility, moderate surge and plenty of drift algae, but we got a few keepers!

Shooting Underwater Portraits While Free Diving
Underwater portrait photography requires patience, communication, and an understanding of natural movement in the water. Working with my friend, who is an excellent diver, allowed us to explore the shallows around the Cove and create dynamic, flowing compositions.
Even though it was her first time modeling, her body awareness underwater translated well on camera, creating expressive, natural poses.
Spring Water Conditions in La Jolla
Spring in San Diego brings warming water and increasing light penetration, which makes underwater photography particularly rewarding. This session showcased:
