Pacific Beach Surf Photography

Southern California has been shifting into classic spring conditions, with warming water, improving light, and a run of clean mornings. After a two weeks of great diving conditions, the swell started to build yesterday, bringing more energy into the lineup.

I was able to catch this morning’s glass-off in Pacific Beach, with clean surface conditions and light winds before it flipped onshore. The tide was on the lower side, which thinned out the shortboarders—leaving clean, workable waves for the longboarders who were making the most of it.

Why Pacific Beach is Great for Surf Photography in San Diego

Pacific Beach and Mission Beach are some of the most accessible locations for surf photography in San Diego. This stretch of coastline offers multiple peaks, and the shifting sandy bottom ensures no two days are the same—creating opportunities to capture a range of surfing styles, from fast shortboard rides to more relaxed longboard lines.

From a photography perspective, Pacific Beach stands out because of:

  • wide open shorelines and multiple peaks

  • consistent, surfable waves

  • easy access for both beach and in-water shooting

It’s a great place to capture both action-driven surf photography and more relaxed coastal lifestyle imagery.

Spring Surf Conditions in San Diego

Spring in San Diego is a transition period, where calmer ocean conditions give way to more consistent swell. Just last week, conditions were ideal for diving, with clearer water and less movement. As the swell builds, visibility can drop, but it opens up more opportunities for dynamic surf photography.

Water temperatures are starting to rise—I’m still in a 3/2 full suit, but a few people are already trunking it.

This session reflected that shift:

  • warming water temperatures

  • increasing swell energy (with more expected next week)

  • clean morning conditions before onshore winds
